Water consumption is something that needs some kind of management. While devices such as Ecodrain have made attempts to make the shower more environmentally-friendly. Currently seeking funding through Indiegogo, Eva is a smart shower that lets users track their water usage and intelligently reduces waste.

The device can replace any existing shower and works with most standard nozzles. Once it’s installed, the shower uses a number of smart features to ensure water isn’t wasted. For those who like to do other tasks while they’re waiting for the water to heat up, Eva cuts the water flow when it’s reached the optimum temperature until users are ready to get in.

When they’re showering, an array of sensors also detects the stage they’re at — offering more water when they’re close to the shower to rinse, and less when they’ve stepped away to lather or shave. The shower can be connected to owners’ smartphones, where they can control it through the Eva app and track their statistics.

Watch the video below for more information about the device:

Eva is available to pre-order through Indiegogo from $99. At the time of writing, the campaign still has 17 hours left, although it’s already reached its funding goal. Are there other household devices that can bring smart capabilities to standard appliances?

Thanks to price comparison sites and daily deals, consumers are always looking for the best possible deal before they buy. We’ve previously seen niche platforms such as Buystand enable retailers with excess stock to sell extreme sports equipment at a price decided by the consumer.

Now Greentoe is an online marketplace that enables consumers to choose their own price for tech gadgets and connects them with retailers willing to fill the request.

Users go through a three step process. First they choose a their desired product — whether it’s a camera, TV, kitchen appliance or musical instrument — and fill out a price they feel comfortable with paying. Next, Greentoe notifies their network of retailers with the offer. The first retailer that accepts the consumer’s price makes the sale.

If the price is accepted, tetailers take care of the tax and shipping costs and deliver the item. If not, consumers can make a new bid by upping their price. The company also recently launched an iOS app that let users send in offers from their smartphone.

Watch the following video to see an illustrated explanation of the retail service:

Greentoe helps retailers clear out stock they otherwise can’t sell while consumers get to pay a price that suits them. Are there other ways for business to give buyers more influence over the price of products and services?

Customer feedback surveys are one way to learn more about how users feel about a product or service, but they’re often time consuming and depend on consumers’ willingness to complete them. Is there an easier way to directly tap customer sentiment?

We’ve already seen DJs use wearable tech such as Lightwave to track live audience reactions to the music. Now XOX is using similar technology to gauge the reaction of crowds through biometric wristbands.

The UK-based company has created a piece of wearable tech that fits around wearers’ wrists and includes a number of sensors that measure their biometrics, such as heartbeat, breathing and body temperature.

Trialled at the recent Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase 2014, attendees were each handed the wristband so they could take part in a demonstration of the XOX technology. As they watched the ad reels being shown at the event, their individual data was tracked and amalgamated into visualizations in real time.

Additionally, the wristbands were equipped with LEDs that changed color depending on the emotions they were feeling, allowing Saatchi & Saatchi to immediately scan the audience to determine how they were reacting to the content.

Watch the video below to see what happened at the event:

XOX’s technology could enable event organizers to more accurately determine how crowds feel in real time. Are there other ways that businesses could incentivize consumers to hand over their personal metrics so they can better target their products or offers?

Giving seniors their independence is important, but it can be hard for family members and caregivers whose elderly relatives live alone to ensure they’re taking their medication without being too intrusive. NVOLVE is a pill bottle holder that tracks prescription use in real time and alerts close contacts if a dose is skipped or taken incorrectly.

The system comes in a variety of different forms — two tree-shaped holders that carry either one or five different pill bottles, two segmented trays that hold five or ten bottles, and seven-section pillbox that splits doses into each day of the week. Each device features sensors that detect the weight of any pills or bottles in order to track when medication is taken.

The holders are synced with data from doctors that detail the prescription dose and time, flagging a discrepancy if users take too much or too little, or at the wrong time of day. Usage is monitored in real time and any problems immediately trigger a notification on relatives’ and caregivers’ phone or computer. The company is currently carrying out trials of the devices, which will eventually go on sale for $75 each.

Services such as PillPack have recognized that pill-taking schedules are difficult to follow — even for young people — and NVOLVE uses smart alerts to warn if users have gone off track. How else can sensor-based technology ensure that important tasks don’t get forgotten?

Not everyone enjoys having bees in their back garden, but the insects’ pollination is vital to the global ecosystem and there has been a dramatic decrease in their number past few decades. Companies such as Bee Landing have in the past created handcrafted hives to encourage more homeowners to help the creatures thrive.

Now the Open Source Beehives project, currently seeking funding on Indiegogo, has developed a downloadable and printable beehive that can be equipped with smart tech to help crowdsource data about the insects living inside.

The designs for the hives were created by a joint venture between Fab Lab Barcelona, the Open Tech Collaborative and Valldaura, based across Denver, Barcelona and Brussels. Those looking to help bees can either pledge USD 15 to download the files to print their own version of the Colorado Top Bar or Barcelona Warré hive, or pay USD 250 to have a flatpack version delivered to their home.

For those wanting to take part in the project however, the USD 600 option will give them both a beehive and the sensor kit to install inside it. The kit measures a variety of factors, from air composition and temperature, to light intensity and sound levels.

The data is sent over wifi and uploaded to the Open Source Beehives project’s servers, accessible from an online platform and API service that lets citizen scientists configure their own data collecting activity. The information then helps the team investigate potential reasons for the bees’ dwindling numbers. The video below explains more about the project:

Are there other ways to get citizens involved in scientific projects to help speed up results that could benefit the environment?
