Customer feedback surveys are one way to learn more about how users feel about a product or service, but they’re often time consuming and depend on consumers’ willingness to complete them. Is there an easier way to directly tap customer sentiment?

We’ve already seen DJs use wearable tech such as Lightwave to track live audience reactions to the music. Now XOX is using similar technology to gauge the reaction of crowds through biometric wristbands.

The UK-based company has created a piece of wearable tech that fits around wearers’ wrists and includes a number of sensors that measure their biometrics, such as heartbeat, breathing and body temperature.

Trialled at the recent Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase 2014, attendees were each handed the wristband so they could take part in a demonstration of the XOX technology. As they watched the ad reels being shown at the event, their individual data was tracked and amalgamated into visualizations in real time.

Additionally, the wristbands were equipped with LEDs that changed color depending on the emotions they were feeling, allowing Saatchi & Saatchi to immediately scan the audience to determine how they were reacting to the content.

Watch the video below to see what happened at the event:

XOX’s technology could enable event organizers to more accurately determine how crowds feel in real time. Are there other ways that businesses could incentivize consumers to hand over their personal metrics so they can better target their products or offers?

Apple’s recent WWDC had it’s gaze firmly fixed on the Internet of Things with the introduction of HomeKit, and it’s a further indication — if there was ever any doubt — that smart homes will soon be mainstream. One innovation we’ve recently discovered looking to make waves in that space is Notifon, a small device which enables users to set up nearly any object to send notifications based on real world activity.

The device consists of up to 14 node units, which act as sensors, and a hub, which acts as a bridge between the node units, the internet, and the ZigBee network which powers the system. To give an example of use, if a user wanted to be notified every time their front door opened, they could set up a node unit with one section on the door and the other section on the door frame — forming a closed circuit.

When the door is opened, the circuit would be broken, which would wirelessly send a signal to the hub. The hub would then send a notification to the owner to alert them that the door has been opened. You can see the device in action, along with other potential uses, below:

[vimeo id=”84857780″ width=”620″ height=”360″]

One of the strengths of the set-up is its ease of use. The nodes have a long battery life, lasting between two to five years, and alerts — which can be sent via Tweet of Email — can be easily managed through the PushingBox cloud. Users with an internet camera can even add real time pictures to their notifications to show the activity taking place that triggered the notification.
The system also includes add-ons such as Karotz, a small animal shaped device which will read out the user’s notification in real time.

Notifon will be available soon, and the public can sign up now to be alerted when it is released. In the meantime, how else can smart technologies be brought to older devices to make the transition to the Internet of Things less costly?

While a concept that looks good on paper might not work for one person, it could still provide inspiration for the masses of entrepreneurs and marketers that are always looking for the next big idea. We’ve already seen Ahhha provide crowdsourced advice for those looking to get their idea off the ground without others stealing it, but now a new platform called Ideas To Steal.Today is encouraging just that, with users posting the ideas they couldn’t make work themselves.

The simple site enables members to log in via Facebook and then upload images or videos that demonstrate their concept, along with a short description. Once approved by moderators, others can then view the idea while browsing the site, which is separated into categories such as mobile, print, radio and social media. Members can like and comment on ideas, even letting the creator know if they’ve stolen it for their own project.

Ideas To Steal.Today ensured that the discarded ideas from brainstorming sessions or failed marketing drafts don’t go to waste by enabling others to be inspired by them. Are there other ways that marketers could take advantage of open-source ideation to create a freer flow of ideas?
