The Sharjah Entrepreneurship Center (Sheraa) has announced the upcoming edition of the Sharjah Startup Studio (S3), a proven comprehensive program expertly designed to empower early-stage entrepreneurs and help them scale their ventures.

Officially opening for applications, S3 offers an invaluable six-month experience that combines personalized guidance with essential resources tailored to the specific needs of startups. Through partnered support from the world’s biggest companies, Sheraa has also secured over AED 3 million in perks and discounts on the tools and services that startups need to scale. This incubator program serves as a comprehensive growth launchpad that recognizes the entrepreneurial journey as a carefully planned commitment.

Commenting on the announcement, Sheraa CEO, Sara Al Nuaimi, stated, “At Sheraa, we believe that entrepreneurship is the backbone of innovation and economic growth. Through this thoughtfully designed incubator program we are adding another generation of visionaries to our thriving ecosystem, and we are excited to see the innovative ideas they will present.”

Expert mentorship and tailored support
S3 is structured around three core pillars, namely, Scaling, Securing, and Supporting. The program provides participants with expert mentorship and a customized roadmap, ensuring that they receive the right support to achieve product-market fit. Upon successful application, startup founders will gain access to Sheraa’s Centers of Excellence (COE) partners, facilitating connections with leading entities and authorities as well as potential customers while absorbing valuable industry insights that can truly make a difference to their chances for success.

The program also has a strong focus on securing funding — one of the most prominent challenges startups face — facilitating introductions to members of Sheraa’s investor network and offering expert guidance in pitch preparation and investor relations. S3’s collaborative environment has proven highly beneficial in past iterations giving entrepreneurs the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals within Sheraa’s extensive entrepreneurial ecosystem, greatly enhancing their growth through shared experiences and resources.

Founders can engage directly with Sheraa’s experienced experts-in-residence (EIRs) and industry specialists, providing ongoing guidance and ensuring that startups remain aligned with their goals. Participants will also benefit from advisory credits that allow for personalized one-on-one sessions with over 30 subject matter experts across various domains, including strategy, operations, fundraising, and product management. This exclusive tailored support is fundamental in navigating the complexities of building a successful startup.

Throughout the six-month program, participants enjoy access to co-working spaces across three hubs in Sharjah, and also features a week-long in-person experience, promoting collaboration and networking. S3 startups also have the invaluable opportunity to showcase their solutions at the Sharjah Entrepreneurship Festival (SEF), partake in a founder’s retreat, and valuable exposure at partner roadshows. Additionally, startups benefit from one year of free company licensing in Sharjah and the opportunity to recruit talent from the emirate’s leading universities, ensuring they build strong, capable teams.

Application process
The application process for S3 is both straightforward and thorough and each application will be carefully reviewed by the Sheraa team. Interested founders should submit their applications via the Sheraa website, marking the first step in their journey. To qualify, startups must have a scalable business model driven by tech-enabled solutions, demonstrate early customer traction and revenue generation, and commit to operating and expanding within Sharjah and the UAE. Additionally, applicants must be operating within the priority sectors of Education Technology (EdTech), Sustainability, Manufacturing, or Creative Industries.

Those meeting these criteria will be invited to a 20-minute screening call to present their solution and prepare to answer any questions about their startup. Selected startups will then participate in a deep-dive session covering product, strategy, legal considerations, and financial planning. Following these evaluations, startups showing exceptional potential will be accepted into the program and begin onboarding, gaining access to S3’s extensive resources and support network.

Sharjah is rapidly emerging as a global hub for innovation, boasting over 60,000 SMEs across its free zones and industrial sectors. With its business-friendly environment and access to unparalleled talent and resources, Sharjah provides an ideal setting for startups looking to thrive. Entrepreneurs are encouraged to seize this opportunity and apply for the Sharjah Startup Studio (S3). By supporting students from the media communication department with expert guidance and exceptional real-world experience in the fields of advertising, public relations, marketing, and communications, the agency will equip future communications professionals with the tools to succeed in the workforce.

Following a rigorous selection process, outstanding students have taken on roles in various departments including editorial, media relations, creative services, social media management, filmmaking, as well as analytics and growth marketing.
Accelerating innovation and entrepreneurial excellence
Another key highlight of the event was the announcement and showcase of the top performing teams for this year’s ‘Startup Dojo+’ program; namely, ‘Eshara’ an AI powered arabic sign language communication platform for the deaf and hard of hearing communities; ‘Embraced’, a local community for neurodivergent adults; ‘NRSAssist’, a healthcare data company with real time wireless monitoring system; ‘Cicero’, an AI Powered Public Speaking Chatbot; ‘Awn’ with their emergency response drone; and ‘OOLADI’ an end to end parenting technological solution. An integral phase of Sheraa’s overarching ‘Startup Dojo’, the recently completed 2024 edition of Startup Dojo+ was an intensive 4-week accelerator program that featured 28 startups — 21 from AUS, and 7 from the University of Sharjah (UOS). Over 50 co-founders and team members representing 15 nationalities participated, with an impressive 50% female representation, underscoring the program’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

The startups covered a diverse range of industries, including AgriTech, EdTech, AI, HealthTech, Waste Management, and more, with many presenting cutting-edge software and hardware solutions. Speaking at the event, Sheraa’s newly CEO Sara Al Nuaimi, said, “This legacy of innovation and impact continues with each new cohort of entrepreneurs who pass through Sheraa’s programs ( . . . ) – together, we will continue to foster a community where ideas flourish, and where the resolve to create a better future is steadfast.”

Enhancing Sharjah’s thriving business ecosystem
Since Sheraa’s inception in 2016, they have enjoyed a strong partnership with AUS and their collective efforts are clearly evident across Sharjah’s thriving business ecosystem, especially regarding entrepreneurship. Upskilling thousands of students throughout the years within the ‘Sheraa AUS Hub’ — a dedicated space for entrepreneurial minded students — there have been a plethora of skill-building activities. These include workshops with global media powerhouses such as CNN, inspiring talks from founders of unicorn businesses like Careem, employment opportunities through their startup career fairs, and an incredible selection of courses.

These collaborative initiatives between Sheraa and AUS echoes both the vision of Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi and the collective mission of these partnered organizations — to create an impactful and sustainable bridge between academia and industry, instilling the spirit of entrepreneurship in students and preparing them for greater success in their chosen fields of interest.

Fuelling Sharjah’s and the UAE’s goals to become the world’s best in the Global Food Security Index by 2051, the Sharjah Entrepreneurship Center (Sheraa) has announced the sixth edition of Access Sharjah Challenge (ASC) with AgriTech and Live Health as its two competition tracks. The AED 500,000 challenge is an unmissable opportunity for startups worldwide who have viable prototypes to receive world-class mentoring and expand globally.

Applicants must apply on the Sheraa website: https://www.startups.sheraa.ae  before September 5, 2024.

The Department of Agriculture and Livestock and the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment have collaborated with Sheraa to design the 2024 edition of ASC. The prestigious initiative also benefits from the support of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Real Estate.

Eligibility, mentorship & product development opportunities and a huge cash prize
To be shortlisted, applicants must present practical, implementable solutions and a ready-to-use model and commit to establishing their company. The top 10 shortlisted ideas will undergo intensive training to refine their concepts into viable projects.

ASC 2024 aims to invite and support startups during their critical growth phase, offering innovative solutions contributing to long-term economic and environmental sustainability. Additionally, entrepreneurs will receive mentorship and guidance to transform their creative ideas into successful, sustainable businesses.

Winners will be selected by a jury and announced. The prize purse of AED 500,000 will be split evenly between winners of the two tracks.

ASC 2024 is part of a larger goal of becoming a global food security leader
Sara Al Nuaimi, CEO of Sheraa, highlighted ASC 2024’s role in providing startups and entrepreneurs worldwide with a platform to showcase their innovative solutions, contributing to positive change and fostering innovation in the emirate. She affirmed the challenge’s alignment with Sharjah’s vision to support the UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051, aiming to position the country as a global leader in innovation-based food security.

She said: “This year’s challenge demonstrates Sheraa’s commitment to establishing Sharjah as a leading regional and global hub in AgriTech and livestock health. By leveraging modern technology, we aim to enhance agricultural production, achieve self-sufficiency, and address water scarcity resulting from climate change and population growth. This advances sustainable development on economic, social, and environmental fronts.”

For his part, Dr. Eng. Khalifa Musabah Al Tunaiji, Chairman of the Department of Agriculture and Livestock in Sharjah, said ASC aims to provide sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by the agricultural and livestock sector. It focuses on developing sustainable strategies to advance the ecosystem, adapt to climate change, and enhance food security by implementing best practices, studies, and innovative technologies, aligning with the national food security strategy and reducing carbon emissions.

He added that Sharjah’s experience in the sector is unparalleled, having made significant efforts to make it resilient. This includes adopting smart and sustainable agricultural practices, using modern technologies to increase wheat production while reducing water usage by 30%, and conducting research at the Mleiha Farm’s biotechnology laboratories. These efforts led to the development of the ‘Sharjah-1’ wheat strain, which is more climate-resilient, water-efficient, highly productive, and nutritionally rich. These achievements earned the Mleiha wheat farm the Future Fit Seal, recognising it as a leading project supporting food security.

AgriTech
The AgriTech track invites innovators to present their visions and establish startups in Sharjah that offer practical solutions, such as sustainable irrigation methods, desalination innovations, and sustainable practices with minimal environmental impact. This track reflects Sheraa’s dedication to addressing water scarcity, which poses a significant threat to regional and global security.

Livestock
The livestock health track provides entrepreneurs opportunities to develop or expand startups specialising in livestock health. This includes monitoring systems, preventive technologies, innovative health solutions, and streamlined treatment processes to ensure livestock sustainability and disease-free conditions. This track aims to enhance Sharjah biosecurity system and support sustainable development in livestock farming by supporting entrepreneurs and innovative projects, in addition to encouraging businesses to participate in sustainable development.

A roadmap to drive sustainable innovation in Sharjah and the UAE
Sheraa introduces two pioneering tracks aimed at fostering innovation in Sharjah’s agricultural and livestock sectors. The AgriTech track focuses on solutions like sustainable irrigation and desalination methods, addressing critical water scarcity issues. Meanwhile, the Livestock track supports startups enhancing livestock health through advanced monitoring and treatment technologies, bolstering biosecurity and sustainability. Winners stand to gain significant benefits, including AED 500,000 in grants, tailored business support, mentorship, networking opportunities, and extensive media coverage, solidifying Sheraa’s commitment to sustainable development and entrepreneurship in the region.
