Sony Middle East and Africa today announced the MDR-M1 Reference Closed Monitor Headphones, designed for music creators and sound engineers to produce music in any environment, heard as they intended. The headphones host a closed acoustic structure with high sound isolation, exclusively developed driver, and a lightweight and comfortable design that allow users to create in their own environments, as if they were in the studio. The MDR-M1 headphones combine studio sound quality with extreme comfort and reliability, suitable for a wide range of music production and high-resolution audio applications.

Sound Characteristics
The MDR-M1 offers studio sound quality with a carefully tuned acoustic structure to support a wide range of music production, all while offering high resolution audio. At the core of the sound quality is a uniquely developed driver unit that achieves ultra-wideband playback (5Hz – 80kHz), featuring a combination of a soft edge shape to reproduce low frequencies with sufficient volume and low distortion, and a hard dome shape to accurately reproduce ultra-high frequencies.

The closed acoustic structure helps eliminate ambient noise and sound leakage from the headphones, making them suitable for use in a variety of production processes, so that each note can be carefully tuned and monitored to support accuracy and authenticity of the creator. A tuned port (Beat Response Control) acts as a ventilation hole to control low frequencies. By optimising the operation of the diaphragm, there are improved low-frequency transient characteristics, making it possible to accurately reproduce sound with a very tight bass response.

Sony aims to create products that enhance both content creation and listening experiences for professionals and consumers. The MDR-M1 headphones were created in collaboration with some of the top sound engineers in the industry, including Mastering Engineer of Battery Studios, Mike Piacentini, and Recording and Mixing Engineer of Power Station at Berklee NYC, Akihiro Nishimura, to ensure an authentic and enriching music experience.

“As engineers, we are often tasked to work in a variety of formats, which are all produced in different environments, on ever-changing speaker systems. Throughout the record production process, I believe it is important to have headphones that provide an accurate reference point, whether you are working on near-field monitors, mastering speakers, or an immersive speaker setup. I’ve worked alongside the incredible Sony’s Tokyo headphone design team, to help create a pair of headphones that is accurate across the frequency spectrum in a variety of use cases. MDR-M1 is a great entry point for any creator” said Mike Piacentini (Mastering Engineer of Battery Studios).

“The tonal balance of the MDR-M1 feels very close to the impression of Power Station’s Studio A control room. In recording sessions, it is important to care what musicians or singers are listening to when they play or sing. MDR-M1 gives you the same impression of listening in a control room headphone, which makes it easier to create music by listening to each other. The comfortable design also makes us focus on music in long sessions. I hope MDR-M1 will become the standard monitoring system for any recording sessions.” said Akihiro Nishimura (Recording and Mixing Engineer of Power Station at Berklee NYC).

Comfort and Design
Engineered with comfort in mind, the MDR-M1’s ear pads were carefully designed to achieve both fit and long wearing comfort. Thick, low resilience padding is used to ensure airtight listening, and a new lighter design makes for a precise fit and excellent comfort for long mixing and mastering sessions.  The MDR-M1 includes two cables, one is a high quality replaceable, detachable cable with a stereo mini-plug and plug adapter (stereo mini-plug to stereo standard plug) and the second shorter cable is also included and can be used depending on the connected equipment and usage environment for ease of use in a professional setting.

The MDR-M1 will also work seamlessly alongside Sony’s 360 Virtual Mixing Environment (360VME)  service to free creators from space constraints and heighten reproduction abilities from virtually anywhere.

Availability
The MDR-M1 headphones will be available in the Middle East and Africa from the 17th of October 2024.

Sony Middle East and Africa announced that Zoom Video Communications, Inc. will be coming to Sony’s BRAVIA TVs that are compatible with BRAVIA CAM. This partnership will allow users to easily connect with friends, family, and colleagues for video calls and meetings from the comfort of their living room. Sony’s BRAVIA is the first TV brand to support the Zoom for TV app on Google Play Store.

With Zoom on BRAVIA TVs, users will be able to take advantage of all the features that make Zoom one of the leading video communication platforms. This includes video communication on a TV screen, screen sharing, and collaboration tools. Users will also be able to use BRAVIA CAM’s advanced features – it recognises where you are in the room and how far you are from the TV, then adjusts sound and picture settings so they’re just right. All of that is possible with a very simple setup – when using a compatible TV with a BRAVIA CAM, it only takes downloading the Zoom app from Google Play and launching it with the TV’s remote.

“We are excited to partner with Zoom to bring video conferencing to our BRAVIA TVs, making Zoom services available on the Android TV platform” said Shusuke Tomonaga, Head of BRAVIA TV Product Design, Product Technology Center, Sony Corporation. “This partnership will make it possible for our customers to enjoy more realistic video communication on a large TV screen in the living room, enabling them to be more connected with the people they care about, whether they are working from home, learning remotely, or just catching up with friends and family.”

“We are thrilled to work with Sony to bring Zoom to their BRAVIA TVs,” said Eric Yu, Head of Hardware Partnership at Zoom. “We are allowing our customers to enjoy the best of both worlds – the convenience of video conferencing on their TV and the power of Zoom’s collaboration tools.”

Sony has announced the availability of its new ZV-E1, an interchangeable-lens camera with a high-performance 35mm full-frame image sensor for the ultimate content creation experience. Positioned at the top of Sony’s ZV camera line-up, it boasts Sony’s E-mount, advanced technology, cinematic imagery with rich gradation performance low noise, and high sensitivity. The world’s most compact, lightweight body offers outstanding mobility, whilst refined operation gives content creators maximum creative freedom and versatility.

Expressive imagery that emphasises the subject
The ZV-E1 is a dedicated content creation camera that features a 35mm full-frame back-illuminated CMOS Exmor R sensor, with approximately 12.1 effective megapixels, that delivers high sensitivity, low noise and gorgeous bokeh.

With up to 8 times more processing power than previous types, the BIONZ XR™ image processing engine markedly boosts high-sensitivity performance, gradation rendering, colour reproduction, low-noise performance, and more. The high volume of data generated by the image sensor can be processed in real time, even when shooting 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160) footage at 120p. The BIONZ XR processor also contributes significantly to improved AF speed and precision.

High-quality 4K (QFHD) video can be recorded with full-frame readout at 10-bit 4:2:2, without the need for 40 pixel binning. This makes the expressive advantages of the full-frame format available for video recording whilst delivering high-resolution 4K footage without moiré or jaggies.

Users can shoot 4K 60p and can upgrade up to 4K 120p through the Creators’ Cloud with extraordinarily smooth 5x (max.) slow-motion imagery. When directly replaying video in slow or quick motion in the S&Q mode while using the XAVC S-I format at 60p, a maximum bit rate of 600 Mbps (4:2:2 10-bit, H.264, All-I) delivers outstanding image quality. When upgraded, and using the XAVC S format, up to 10x slow motion with Full HD resolution can be used at 240 fps providing fresh perspectives on dynamic sports and other types of action.

A 15+ stop latitude makes it possible to capture natural looking images in a wide variety of lighting situations without losing highlight or shadow detail.

The standard ISO range extends from 80 to 102400 for both stills and movies. The expanded range for stills is 40 to 409600, and the expanded range for movies is 80 to 409600.

Turn cinematic aspirations into reality
The ZV-E1 can create standout content with Cinematic Vlog Settings – an intuitive way to create scenes that look like feature movies. By choosing an appropriate Look and Mood, anyone can create cinematic vlog footage that ideally matches the scene and creative intent. Cinematic Vlog Setting include ‘Looks’ that delivers natural mid-tones, plus soft colours and smooth highlights that are essential to cinematic look and enhance skin tones, ‘Moods’ that emphasise specific colours, and AF transition speed that determines how quickly autofocus will switch between subjects. The overall cinematic feel is further enhanced by a 24 fps frame rate and the widescreen Cinemascope aspect ratio (2.35:1) with black bands above and below the image.

For a truly cinematic look, the ZV-E1 features S-Cinetone. Based on Sony’s Cinema Line technology, S-Cinetone delivers natural mid-tones that are essential to healthy-looking skin colour to deliver cinematic quality.

A selection of new Creative Looks makes it easy to create interesting looks for stills and video right in the camera. 10 Creative Looks are provided as presets that can be used as they are or customised. What’s more, newly added My Image Style makes it possible to shoot in the Intelligent Auto or Scene Selection mode, icons on the touch-sensitive monitor make it easy to directly adjust background bokeh, brightness, and colour tone, as well as select a Creative Look.

AI plus leading technology delivers consistently stunning imagery
Real-time Recognition AF incorporates an innovative AI processing unit that uses subject form data to accurately recognise movement – human pose estimation technology uses learned human forms and postures to recognise not just eyes, but body and head position with high precision, making it possible to lock onto and track a subject facing away from the camera. The AI processing unit can even differentiate between multiple subjects having different postures and recognition of individual faces has also been improved so that tracking reliability is achieved in challenging situations such as when a subject’s face is tilted, in shadow, or backlit. In addition to Human and Animal, the AI processing unit now makes it possible to recognise Bird, Insect, Car/Train and Airplane subjects, providing even greater flexibility and reliability when shooting both stills and video.

The ZV-E1 features AI-based Real-time Tracking that can be activated by specifying the subject and half-pressing the shutter button. The camera will then automatically track the subject, leaving the user free to concentrate on framing and composition. The new camera has a fast Hybrid AF for fast acquisition and tenacious tracking as well detailed AF settings for the ultimate precision and control.

A compact, precision stabilisation unit and gyro sensors with optimised algorithms achieve up to 5.0-step stabilisation that helps to deliver the full image quality potential of the ZV-E1. Camera shake is detected and effectively corrected in 5 axes and the in-body image stabilisation of the vlog camera can provide effective stabilisation with a wide range of lenses, including E-mount lenses that do not include stabilisation of their own.

Dynamic active Mode stabilisation is approximately 30% more effective than the Active Mode[xxxi] provided in previous models. This makes it easier than ever to shoot smooth, stable vlog footage whilst moving around for bold, dynamic expression.

Another amazing feature of the ZV-E1 is the AI-based Auto Framing for video ideal for recording interviews, music performances, cooking, and much more. Using AI-based subject recognition technology, the Auto Framing feature automatically crops the frame to keep the subject in a prominent position when shooting video. Even without moving the camera the framing is continually adjusted to follow the subject smoothly, which will be also helpful for one man shooting operation. The subject to be tracked can be easily selected via the camera’s touch-sensitive monitor or the Creator’s App on a smartphone.

Breathing Compensation suppresses image shifts whilst focusing to maintain a consistent angle of view and achieve smooth, dramatic focusing effects. The camera also features Multiple Face Recognition which automatically adjusts bokeh and focus on multiple recognised faces when shooting group selfies or group portraits – preventing problems like only the faces in the front being in focus whilst those further back are out of focus.

The ZV-E1 also boasts a Framing Stabiliser that automatically keeps the subject’s position in the frame constant. Advanced AI-based subject recognition technology works with the camera’s Dynamic active Mode image stabilisation to keep the subject smoothly and stably in the frame as you like freely during handheld shooting – This makes it possible to create smooth video expressions, such as when taking follow-up shots or shooting around the subject.

With the ZV-E1 skin tones are independently optimised for stills and video, so skin is natural and beautifully rendered whether shooting selfies or vlogging. The camera also features a Bokeh Switch for one-touch background bokeh enhancement and a soft skin effect when shooting video.

Of course, the ZV-E1 also includes the Product Showcase Setting for product review videos so users can smoothly switch focus from the presenter’s face to a product held in front of the lens and back again.

Smooth, simple, versatile zoom
Users can expect creative zoom control with the ZV-E1. The zoom lever located on the top of the grip not only controls compatible powered zoom lenses, but also allows Clear Image Zoom to be used with unpowered zoom and prime lenses with less image degradation. This can significantly reduce the number of lenses required for many projects.

Real-time Recognition AF, Real-time Tracking, and focus area settings remain active while zooming digitally or with Clear Image Zoom, ensuring that the full precision and speed of the camera’s phase-detection AF system is achieved, even during digital zoom operations.

Control time to capture unforgettable moments and situations
In-camera Time-lapse creation is a great feature for users who want to record Time-lapse sequences like the movements of clouds, people, cities and other slowly changing subjects in uniquely expressive ways. The exposure interval can be set from 1 second to 60 seconds, making it easy to compress slow action into enjoyable time-lapse sequences.

Advanced audio for winning content
The ZV-E1 features a high-performance 3 capsule microphone with variable directivity that can pick up clear audio in outdoor situations where wind and environmental noise can be a problem and is supplied with a windscreen that can significantly reduce wind noise when shooting in windy outdoor conditions. Auto, Front, All Directions, and Rear directivity settings are available to match a variety of environments, and automatically switches to a direction in line with face recognition, so users can easily make optimal recordings.

The camera also includes a Multi Interface (MI) shoe with digital audio interface and mic and headphone jacks offer expanded audio capabilities.

Advanced editing support gets the creator’s intent across
The ZV-E1 supports advanced video recording modes – fast readout and high-volume data processing capabilities of the full-frame image sensor enable full-frame 4K readout without pixel binning, plus a range of recording formats that deliver notably improved image quality and more flexible, efficient editing in post-production.

The ZV-E1 can record 10-bit 4:2:2 video internally when using Long GOP or All Intra compression, supports internal intra-frame (All-I) recording and XAVC HS format recording using the MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 codec provides approximately doubled efficiency.

The ZV-E1 also has Flexible ISO, which is set to AUTO or manually set between 640 and 102400 (160 and 409600 in expanded ISO mode and Picture profile with assignable LUTs so users can create specific looks when shooting in modes other than one of the preset Log modes.

Designed for smooth, easy content creation
The ZV-E1 has been designed for ease of use, with a side-opening vari-angle LCD Screen for easy monitoring and touch function whilst recording and control layout and grip optimised for content creation.

Features for convenient, confident shooting
The new camera features uninterrupted power for extended recording with Sony’s high-capacity Z battery and USB PD (Power Delivery) that supports fast charging. For even better power performance the image processing engine, image sensor, and related circuitry have been designed to optimise power economy in all shooting conditions.

Compact and lightweight for outstanding mobility
The ZV-E1 is the world’s most compact, lightweight camera with a full-frame CMOS sensor and lens interchangeability. Its extraordinary mobility gives content creators new capabilities for creative expression.

It features a dust and moisture-resistant design. ZV-E1 can even be operated with one hand if using a Shooting Grip with Wireless Remote Commander (GP-VPT2BT).

In-depth editing
The ZV-E1 records image stabilisation and camera rotation metadata that can be useful when editing in the free Catalyst Browse desktop application, paid Catalyst Prepare desktop application or plugin as users can quickly and precisely stabilise footage during editing. Lens breathing compensation can be applied during editing.

High-quality live streaming
Stream top-quality live content as when connected to a personal computer or smartphone via USB the ZV-E1 can function as a 4K (2160p) webcam and take online meetings, live events, and even simple conversations with family and friends to new creative heights.

Designed with sustainability in mind
In addition to Sony’s commitment to a sustainable future with global initiatives like Road to Zero and the 2030 renewable energy goal, the ZV-E1 has been specifically developed with sustainability in mind.

The camera has a windscreen using fibres made from recycled PET bottles[liv] to reduce Sony’s environmental impact, without compromising functionality.

Lastly, the outer packaging of the ZV-E1 is environmentally conscious and recyclable with no plastic and employs Sony’s ‘Original Blend Material’ – bamboo, sugar cane and recycled paper. Also, plant-based non-woven fabrics are used for the product bags to minimise Sony’s environmental footprint.

Also, ZV-E1 includes new accessibility features that facilitate operation in several ways, including screen reader functionality for the visually impaired. Accessibility features allow anyone to enjoy shooting and playback using the ZV-E1.

The universal desire to experience joy, wonder and amazement remained constant in 2022, with people expecting similar experiences that evoke ‘kando’, or an emotional connection, in 2023. These are among key technology trends identified by Sony Middle East & Africa, which has charted strong growth in the Middle East in 2022 as it supports the region’s growing media, entertainment and gaming industry with better services and products.

Joebin Joejoe, Deputy Managing Director at Sony Middle East and Africa, said “We are increasingly witnessing people’s offline lives and emotions becoming deeply intertwined with their digital lives. At Sony, we believe technology is a tool to add more value and opportunity for a richer, more emotional life – and we will be focused on delivering enhanced experiences through emerging technologies in 2023.”

Sony has identified three key trends that are set to dominate the digital landscape in 2023.

Rise of the metaverse
Networks are rapidly expanding into an interactive entertainment space that delivers live experiences while also providing a social element, in the form of the metaverse. Sony views the rise of the metaverse from a less dystopian perspective in 2023 and anticipates the rise of a social and live network space where games, music, movies, and anime intersect. Mocopi, Sony’s wearable motion-tracking system makes metaverse more engaging and fun. A PoC (proof of concept) is being conducted by Sony with English Premier League football club Manchester City to realise the next generation of online fan communities and engagement by experiencing metaverse content as if they were in Etihad Stadium. Fans can create their own customisable avatars, connect with millions of fans across the globe, and access various services to increase engagement.

Emergence of adaptive and generative AI
The use of state-of-the-art AI is set to take off in 2023, especially Adaptive AI and Generative AI. Conventional AI can only detect and analyse picture elements like colour, contrast and clarity individually, with the picture element enhanced to only a certain level. But the way the world is perceived is based on all kinds of information coming from our eyes and ears to our brain. For example, Sony’s technology in its Alpha 7RV mirrorless camera features an advanced AI focusing system that can accurately detect not only human faces, but also birds, animals and insects. Similarly, Sony’s Cognitive Processor XR cross-analyses hundreds of thousands of elements at once and delivers immersive realism. Meanwhile, Sony’s new high-tech electric vehicle Afeela will have AI, virtual reality and augmented reality, representing the concept of an interactive relationship where people feel the sensation of interactive mobility by utilising sensing and AI technologies.

3D Optical Technology
The 3D content and animation market will continue to grow in the coming years. Despite the 3D optical developments in recent years, the need for 3D glasses or precise viewing angles limited the adoption rate and potential applications for 3D optical displays. Sony’s Spatial Reality Display (SR Display) technology reproduces the real world with 3D spatial images on a 2D screen – so that specially crafted 3D content can be viewed by the naked eye without special glasses or headsets. SR Display allows viewers to see the depth, texture, and appearance of the object with a real sense of presence, reproducing medical images and product designs more realistically.

Sony Middle East & Africa (MEA) announces the World of Film, an initiative to celebrate Sony’s legacy and continued commitment to the movie making world. Whether it be involvement with high profile blockbuster studios or an individual crafting their indie film, Sony is committed in their creative journey every step of the way through the power of their Alpha series interchangeable lens cameras and Cinema Line camera series. The campaign began on 2 August 2021 and will run until the end of the year.

Sony’s Film Legacy
For decades, Sony has pushed the boundaries in the world of filmmaking and stayed at the forefront of cutting edge cinematic technology. Sony Middle East and Africa have officially announced a first-of-its-kind initiative for content creators in the Middle East. The Sony Mentorship Program is a three-month long program that aims to discover, nurture, and elevate regional talent. The program is open to content creators, visualizers, and aspiring storytellers in the Middle East and Africa.

Murat Gebeceli, Head of Digital Imaging, Sony Middle East & Africa said “We look forward to discovering and guiding a new generation of bold and fresh new creative talents through the Sony Mentorship Program, an initiative that reflects our commitment to expanding opportunities available to regional talent. Through the three-month program, we will be empowering creatives with access to world-class gear such as Sony Vlogging Camera ZV1 as well as guidance from mentors, who are all successful trailblazers in their own right.”

Applicants’ images and/or videos can be shot using any equipment of their choice, even a computer camera or smartphone. The personal video is meant to give the judges a visual introduction to the applicant’s persona. Applicants are required to be on camera to introduce themselves, and not provide just a voice-over.,

Based on their applications, eight participants will then be selected for entry into the Sony Mentorship Program. The deadline to submit the application is midnight, January 15, 2020 UAE time. Selected participants will be notified after January 24, 2021, via email or phone. The three-month long program takes places from end January until April 2021.

Eight powerhouse industry players will be assigned to be one-on-one mentors to the eight successful applicants. The eight mentors are Chris Taylor (@lifeofchristaylor), Thandi Gama (@thandigama), Siyanda Dzenga (@siyabunny), Rosemin Manji (@roseminsworld), Emkwan (@emkwan), Layla Akil (@laylaakil), Ghida Arnout (@monkyseemonkydo) and Mawada Tak (@mawadda_tak). All the mentors are known for their strong social media influence, fresh ideas and unconventional approach to visual content creation.

The eight mentees will also be given a Sony Vlog Camera ZV-1 and GP-VPT2BT Grip, worth $1000, to shoot as well as the opportunity to let their final project shine on the world stage. They will have access to exclusive online workshops to improve their photography, videography and editing skills. Mentees also have the opportunity to have their project featured on Sony’s social media channels and Alpha Universe MEA.

Three of the mentees will be announced as the final winners in April 2021, once the program concludes, judged for the quality and creativity of their resulting content. The first winner will be awarded $3,000 (Approx 11,000 AED), the second winner will walk away with $2,000 (Approx 7400 AED), and the third winner with $1,000 (Approx 3700 AED), along with a chance to do a commissioned project with Sony. Additionally, they will be recognized as pioneer members of Sony Collective, with their completed projects featured on AlphaUniverse.com.

Three ZV1 cameras are also up for grabs for the general public across the region, when they vote for their choice of winners in the competition. The program is currently open only to legal, adult residents of the Middle East and Africa. Applicants can be users of any camera brand.
