Gonzalo Galindo, Head of Cemex Ventures, highlights the Top 50 Contech Startups 2024, emphasizing AI-driven efficiency, sustainability, and automation. Key trends include robotics, predictive analytics, and low-carbon materials, shaping construction’s future amid investment growth and regulatory shifts.

What were the key criteria for selecting the startups included in this year’s Top 50 Contech Startups list?
The selection process is based on several criteria and is decided by the Investment &  Business Development team. One of the strongest sources to build this list is the Construction Startup Competition, completed with the contributions from our investment and collaboration pipeline. We select startups with unique and innovative solutions that are aligned with Cemex Ventures’ four focus areas—green construction, enhanced productivity, supply chain, and construction future—and their potential to disrupt traditional practices of the construction industry. Overall, we aim to find passionate and resilient entrepreneurs and businesses that are covering the needs and challenges of the current built environment.

What major trends in construction technology stood out among the companies on the list this year?
This year, we saw a surge in solutions addressing the reduction of carbon footprint through sustainable materials (recycled and upcycled materials) and more efficient and productive construction processes.. There was also a noticeable rise in AI-driven tools for project management, project tracking, predictive analytics & maintenance, and automation, as well as advancements in industrialized construction methods and robotics to address labour shortages and efficiency gaps. Beyond our Top 50 report, we saw that 37% of all the capital raised in construction tech ecosystem went to AI, and the largest deals registered in 2024 went to solutions using AI.

Are there any regions or markets that showed a notable increase in innovation or representation in this year’s list compared to previous years?
North America and Europe continue leading the investment activity in our industry with 85% of all Contech transactions. From a deal perspective, Asia-Pacific showed significant growth in representations, with innovative startups tackling challenges unique to densely populated urban areas. Europe also strengthened its presence with growth across all the focus areas, although sustainability and productivity took 66% of the transactions. It seems that sustainability-driven solutions continue reflecting the region’s regulatory pressure to adopt and implement greener construction practices.

How many selected startups focus on sustainability, and what specific solutions stood out in addressing environmental challenges?
We try to build a balanced list of startups across our verticals every year. However, we see solutions from other buckets with a slight sustainability component, such as making processes efficient and greener by consuming fewer resources. In the Green Construction group, key innovations included CCUS technologies, LCA tools, AI tools for optimizing material usage, recycled construction materials and waste management, startups developing alternative cementitious materials and water efficiency & conservation.

With AI becoming increasingly integral, how are the listed startups leveraging artificial intelligence and automation to transform the construction industry?
AI is being used across various phases of the construction value chain, from generative design to predictive maintenance and real-time project monitoring. Many startups on the list leverage AI to optimize workflows, improve safety through automated risk assessments, and reduce project delays by predicting supply chain bottlenecks. Likewise, automation is particularly prevalent in robotics for tasks like bricklaying, 3D printing, site inspections or rebar works.

Which startups or categories on the list do you see as having the highest investment potential or the greatest impact in the near future?
Startups focused on the sustainability, decarbonization and supply chain efficiency fields stand out for their investment potential, given the pressing demand for tackling industry´s carbon footprint, resource optimization, regulatory pressure and meet carbon budgets and targets. Specifically, those developing low-carbon materials, energy-efficient technologies, and AI-driven supply chain platforms are likely to have the greatest near-term impact. Lastly, the race for full automated sites has started, startups succeeding in automation lowering actual costs and increasing production will also take investors’ attention.

Are any of the startups from the list currently collaborating with Cemex Ventures, and if so, can you share examples of these partnerships?
All the startups included in the list are (or has been) part of our pipeline. While all these companies can benefit from our knowledge, our extensive network, or programs like the Construction Startup Competition, we prioritize those solutions whose vision is aligned with Cemex´s strategic needs and those that can help our operations to be more sustainable and efficient making our corporation more reliable and competitive. For example, some of these startups have participated in our acceleration program LeapLab, others are already collaborating with our operations and others are working with our Global R&D team.

Based on the innovations showcased, what do you see as the most significant opportunities and challenges for Contech in the next 5-10 years?
The most promising opportunities lie in addressing our industry decarbonization challenges throughout the entire construction lifecycle. The optimization of processes to make construction sites leaner and agile performing tasks on time and on budget will continue with capital inflows in the next years. Advances in AI, robotics, and industrialized construction will help to achieve this level of optimization. However, challenges include the slow adoption rate of new technologies due to the fragmented nature of the industry, regulatory hurdles, materials scarcity or the need for substantial investment to scale these solutions globally.

Fuze, a leading digital assets infrastructure provider in MENA, and Fils, an award-winning platform embedding sustainability and climate action into business operations, have joined forces to launch the first-of-its-kind sustainable digital asset solution in the Middle East, Africa, and Turkey. This partnership represents a critical milestone for both companies as they combine advanced financial solutions with bold environmental action.

This collaboration will integrate blockchain-powered solutions through Fils’ use of the Layer-1 blockchain, ensuring transparency, traceability, and trust in every transaction, creating a seamless way for customers to measure and offset the carbon footprint of their digital asset purchases, supporting regional institutions and fintechs in meeting sustainability goals while navigating the growing demand for digital assets, and to lead in sustainability by aligning with global ESG goals.

The importance of this initiative is also underscored by the UAE’s rapidly growing digital assets market, which is projected to generate $453 million in revenue by the end of 2024, with further growth expected to surpass $616 million by 2028.

Nameer Khan, Founder and CEO of Fils, commented: “Our partnership with Fuze represents a milestone for both fintech and sustainability in the region. By embedding climate action directly into the digital assets ecosystem and leveraging the power of our blockchain technology, we’re providing the most comprehensive and first-of-its-kind solution that not only meets but exceeds global ESG expectations. This partnership underlines the growing importance of aligning financial innovation with environmental responsibility. Together, we are building the rails for a future where every transaction contributes to a greener planet, demonstrating how fintech can lead the charge in achieving net-zero goals.”

Mohammed Ali Yusuf (Mo Ali Yusuf), Co-Founder and CEO of Fuze, shared: “Our partnership with Fils underscores Fuze’s commitment to innovation and responsibility. As digital assets become a mainstay for financial institutions, embedding sustainability in these transactions is essential for long-term growth and environmental stewardship. Aramex has collaborated with The Surpluss, MENA’s leading digital sustainability exchange for SMEs, to tackle and capitalize on excess business assets, materials, and space.

The collaboration will support new and existing Aramex merchants and SMEs in the UAE to embed sustainability within their supply chain, both up and downstream. In addition, members of The Surpluss will benefit from Aramex’s extensive logistics network at competitive rates, ensuring reliable and timely delivery of their materials and products to various destinations worldwide.

Tarek Abuyaghi, General Manager of Aramex, said: “We are delighted to join forces with The Surpluss and offer SMEs in the UAE an innovative and economically viable platform to make their supply chains eco-friendly. As a responsible business, we believe that strategic partnerships are essential for enhancing our operational efficiency while benefiting our customers. This collaboration aligns well with our strategic priorities, particularly customer centricity, continuous innovation, and sustainability and engagement. Aramex is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050, and forging new partnerships like these is vital for accelerating our climate action goals.”

Rana Hajirasouli, founder of The Surplus explains: “We are honoured to be collaborating with Aramex to help SMEs supercharge their business in an affordable and efficient way to contribute to the circular economy. This is a bold example of how shifting to less wasteful practices and engaging your entire value chain does not need to be expensive, on the contrary, it can yield profits. Increasing logistics costs remain a potent barrier for SMEs to shift to sustainable production practices, and many companies opt to landfill their idle inventory than resell it. We hope this partnership will overcome this challenge, offering a strong case study as the UAE continues to lead the way to overcoming global bottlenecks to circular economy adoption.”

SMEs represent over 90% of the UAE economy; however, the adoption of circular economy and sustainability remains a challenge. The partnership aims to fill this gap by lowering the financial barriers and risk appetite for companies to source and sell their idle inventory and assets to increase working capital and enhance competitiveness while reducing waste to landfill and carbon emissions.

In addition, two startups, Agritrack and SEaB Energy, were given the opportunity to showcase their sustainability and climate solutions at the COP28 Startup Village in their very own dedicated kiosk space.

The success of the GrowthX Accelerator program underscores the unwavering commitment of Microsoft and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office to nurturing the UAE’s startup ecosystem and empowering the next generation of innovators to tackle real challenges facing organizations and communities. This dedication aligns seamlessly with the visionary leadership of the UAE, which is firmly committed to elevating the UAE’s position as one of the world’s most dynamic and promising startup hubs.

Schneider Electric has announced that the Schneider Electric Sustainability School is open for enrolment. Free to access, the digital platform provides a range of interactive courses aimed at equipping companies and professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to improve their sustainability performance.

First launched internally to educate Schneider Electric employees to better support the company’s partner ecosystem, the three-part programme is now available externally for professionals and companies of all sizes, empowering them to take a first step towards a more sustainable future.

Decarbonizing the economy is a business opportunity

Schneider Electric operates as an Impact Company, placing sustainability at the core of its business to achieve a positive, lasting impact on the planet and society. With Electricity 4.0 at the heart of programme, the Sustainability School compliments and strengthens this commitment, supporting partners in accelerating climate action across three core pillars: Strategize, Digitize and Decarbonize.

Recognizing that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often lack the knowledge and tools required to establish climate targets, measure impacts such as carbon emissions, and benchmark and disclose progress, the comprehensive training platform is designed to support them in embarking on their decarbonization journey. Over three chapters, it covers a range of topics from energy efficiency and renewable energy to the circular economy and sustainable transportation.

· Chapter 1: Understanding sustainability and the risks involved [intake now open]
o In the first chapter, attendees will learn the basics of sustainability, including the science and jargon behind it and why it is crucial for businesses to take environmental, social and governance factors (ESG) seriously.

· Chapter 2: Discover how to take sustainable action as a company [Launching Q3, 2023]
o The second chapter focuses on how SMEs can build a decarbonization strategy, including information on easy-to-implement tools that can support them in decarbonizing their own operations and that of their customers.

· Chapter 3: Leverage sustainable skills to increase business opportunities [Launching Q1, 2024]
o The third chapter summarizes the key knowledge and tools learnt throughout the programme – from energy efficiency to decarbonization – to support attendees in putting the theory into practice.

“The Sustainability School for partners is our big next move to prove that companies can not only do business that is better for the planet but can also fundamentally improve their performance by doing so,” Sorouch Kheradmand, Head of Partner Sustainability at Schneider Electric said. “We are proud to announce the launch of our new online courses, which are designed to educate and inspire individuals and organizations to adopt sustainable practices. Sustainability is at the heart of our business, and we believe that education is key to driving change and creating a more sustainable future.”

Masdar City has strengthened its ties with Hub71, Abu Dhabi’s global tech ecosystem, to promote opportunities for clean tech and climate tech start-ups focused on sustainability.

They both will also promote knowledge sharing by providing Hub71’s existing start-ups access to Masdar City’s corporate tenants and partners and explore incentives to help these companies establish permanent roots in the UAE. The agreement also names Hub71 Masdar City’s official start-up ecosystem partner.

H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the UAE, has just announced that 2023 will be the year of sustainability. Partnerships like this one will be a vital component of bringing this vision to life and demonstrate our shared commitment to advancing the UAE economy through ambitious, tech-focused enterprises,” said Ahmed Baghoum, the acting CEO of Masdar City. “As one of the world’s most sustainable cities and a hub for innovation, research, and development, we share Hub71’s vision for providing start-ups with an ideal environment to scale technologies that will have a sustainable impact globally. Together, we will work toward the UAE’s mission to achieve net zero.”

Hub71 start-ups will also benefit from The Catalyst, the region’s first start-up accelerator focused on sustainability and clean tech, which is jointly owned by Masdar City and BP. The Catalyst and Hub71 will work together to develop a sector-focused accelerator program to enhance the benefits available to climate tech start-ups, including finance.

“The joint effort from all three entities will provide start-ups a platform to scale their cleantech innovation, provide access to shareholder networks, and prepare them to showcase their capabilities at COP28,” added Baghoum.

Hub71 has supported over 200 start-ups that have collectively raised more than US$1 billion in funds since its launch in 2019. It recently onboarded another 20 startups from six countries operating in different strategic sectors.

“Our partnership with Masdar City will support the growth of start-ups in the climate tech and sustainability sectors in Abu Dhabi, building on the UAE capital’s robust strategy and

initiatives in these sectors. By providing operational, engagement and exposure opportunities, start-ups will be in a better position to deploy clean technologies that will contribute toward the national and global climate change agenda,” said Ahmad Ali Alwan, the deputy CEO of Hub71.

“Green tech and climate tech investments are needed to address the environmental and climate challenges facing the world today. Following Egypt’s COP27 and with COP28 taking place in the UAE later this year, the time is ripe for MENA’s climate-tech start-ups to bloom.

Our partnership with Hub71 and the success to date of The Catalyst show we’re ready to make that happen,” said Stephen Severance, the director of growth at Masdar City.

Sustainability was among the major topics highlighted at the sixth edition of the Sharjah Entrepreneurship Festival (SEF) 2022, and supported by the Sustainability and Innovation Zone powered by Sharjah Sustainable City.

The event organized by Sharjah Entrepreneurship Centre (Sheraa) under the theme “Where We Belong”, featured some of the most advanced innovations in the field and attracted a large number of participants including policymakers, CEOs, entrepreneurs, investors, artists, and media influencers.

During the festival, the Sustainability and Innovation Zone hosted different booths providing a broader picture of the issues related to sustainability, as well as showcasing practical solutions toward realizing a sustainable future, especially in the Middle East region, which is characterized by scarce freshwater resources, arid environments, and extreme temperatures.

One of the Zone’s primary attractions was the Sharjah Sustainable City booth, where participants converged to learn about this unique initiative that has led to developing the first sustainable master-planned community in the Emirate of Sharjah.

As one of the Enable Partners of the SEF 2022 and in recognition of its valuable contribution to the festival and the areas of sustainability, Sharjah Sustainable City was honoured with a special award at the festival’s opening ceremony. The award was presented by Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Entrepreneurship Centre (Sheraa) and Najla Al-Midfa, CEO of the Sharjah Entrepreneurship Center (Sheraa), and received by Yousif Ahmed Al-Mutawa, Chief Executive Officer of Sharjah Sustainable City.

Commenting on the festival, Yousif Ahmed Al-Mutawa, said “The event was an excellent platform to showcase to the world our sustainability journey and highlight years of efforts toward developing the eco-friendly residential city that promotes a lifestyle well-suited to the future. The event and its theme ‘Where We Belong’ aligned well with our continued commitment toward supporting innovation in the UAE and its transition to a sustainable future and reducing the carbon footprint.”

“I congratulate Sheraa and other organizers for the successful event that served as a global entrepreneurship festival and provided an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas on sustainability, creativity, and innovation, for a diverse group of participants, including youth and women. I also congratulate all the start-ups that we sponsored for showcasing their innovations at the event; I’m sure their contributions will further boost sustainability efforts for a better tomorrow,” added Al-Mutawa.

Supporting Innovation in Sustainability
Over the two days, Sharjah Sustainable City also powered two workshops at the festival’s Startup Town. It included a workshop on empowering creativity through repurposing waste, showing how recyclables such as plastic waste can be transformed into aesthetic items, and another workshop focused on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in sustainability. It explored challenges that SMEs may encounter in implementing sustainability and how to overcome them. Also, participants, which included entrepreneurs, and founders of SMEs, learned how to integrate sustainability into their business operations and strategies.

In line with its efforts toward supporting new ideas and boosting ‘sustainopreneurship’ within the country and beyond, Sharjah Sustainable City also sponsored booths of eight start-ups to help them showcase their valuable work in the areas of sustainability and related fields.

The start-ups, which include FortyGuard, FUSE, Circa Biotech, Nadeera, We4Recycle, Cycled Technologies AS, ZeLoop, and KRISPR, offer a wide range of innovative solutions, including machine platforms to understand temperatures, converting classic cars to electric vehicles (EV), upcycling food waste into high-quality animal feed, solid waste management as well as redefining food commerce from production to consumption.

TikTok has emerged as a destination for conversations focused on the most urgent environment and sustainability issues, with an active and engaged community of creators committed to raising awareness, inspiring action, and restoring the planet.

TikTok is thrilled to see the creativity and impact being achieved by the community with creators and organizations taking their communities along with them to make a difference by sharing simple tips with the communities about the changes they can make in their everyday lives to combat climate change.

TikTok is committed to transforming climate anxiety into empowerment, helping their community and the next generation be informed and engaged. By providing access to credible climate information, elevating voices of climate advocates, experts and organizations dedicated to raising climate awareness and literacy along with collaborating with communities and partners who share the same vision around the world, TikTok aims to inspire hopeful dialogue and real action for a more sustainable future.

Additionally, to support the region’s burgeoning creative economy and contribute to a global cause, the platform recently launched the inaugural TikTok Creator Hub, with this year’s theme as climate change. Acer Aspire Vero is the first sustainability-focused product from Acer’s portfolio featuring post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and eco-friendly packaging. The Aspire Vero (AV15-51) has swiftly become a popular choice for eco-conscious consumers and commercial users in the Middle East.

The Aspire Vero is a product designed not only for the energy efficiency of the net-zero age, but also to navigate the complex landscape of direct and indirect emissions, as well as supply chain and carbon offsetting transactions. The result is a holistic concept that is sustainable at its core and actively contributes to a circular economy in an age when an estimated 160 million laptops are manufactured every year globally, and a total of 160,000 are thrown away every day in the European Union alone.

That’s why it is essential to look at the whole lifecycle of a laptop when considering its environmental impact.

The Aspire Vero reimagines what the computer manufacturing process should look like in the energy-efficient era and more. With a comprehensive eco-design concept and a unique, eco-iconic look, the laptop brings a fresh appeal to green designs – with its chassis composed of 30% PCR plastic while cutting CO2 emissions by 21% for the production of the part.

The Aspire Vero’s keycaps also contain 50% PCR plastic, and its award-winning 100% recyclable packaging can be repurposed as a cool DIY laptop stand. Unlike most modern laptops that are designed to last just a few years and are hard to upgrade, the Aspire Vero is thoughtfully designed to eliminate needless waste by making it easy to disassemble, repair, upgrade and recycle the computer or its components.

The Acer Aspire Vero notebook stands out with unique yellow and volcano grey accents on its bumpers, and the text on the R and E keys have been inverted to highlight the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle.

But the laptop’s green credentials do not compromise on the durable performance that Acer has come to stand for around the world. The Aspire Vero run the recently-released Windows 11 operating system, making it incredibly easy to use, too.

The green PC’s 99% recyclable 15.6-inch FHD IPS SlimBezel PCR display is powered by 11th Gen Intel Core processors and Intel Iris Xe Graphics, so users can count at once on world-class performance and productivity while using a genuinely sustainable product. The notebook supports up to 16 GB of DDR4 Memory as well as 512 GB or 1 TB of PCIe NVMe SSD storage, capable of withstanding content creators’ ongoing demands and creative challenges.

The Aspire Vero is also at its prime when working on less demanding tasks, with Acer’s new VeroSense software giving users the option of selecting a usage mode that has been optimised for energy efficiency and battery life. Features like Wi-Fi 6, a Type-C USB port and two Type-A USB ports make the Aspire Vero a reliable and future-ready device.

The Aspire Vero also looks forward to the future in more ways than the net-zero. With work-from-home becoming a commonplace fixture, the new generation of Acer TrueHarmony™ and Acer PurifiedVoice™ with AI noise reduction fitted in the laptop actively suppresses background noise for users to create the best possible conference call quality.

Embracing a full 360-degree pledge to care for the earth, Acer Middle East has also partnered with Matiti Green to plant 10 trees on behalf of the customer for every Aspire Vero sold.

But if these industry-leading features were not enough, Acer has taken its commitment to sustainability a step further by launching its “Earthion” platform dedicated towards tackling global environmental challenges – an initiative that is in close synergy with the pursuit of a low-carbon future for the region’s economies.

From 2020, all of Acer’s notebooks have adopted recycled paper for packaging, saving 8,750 kg of paper pulp and cut down on the usage of 20 million plastic bags. From Acer’s internal recycling activities, over 50 metric tons of batteries were recycled and remanufactured into new ones. This is a global effort in which more than 75% of Acer employees across 50 countries participated.

The combination of pragmatic action and thoughtful design has helped Acer create not only a unique sustainability-focused notebook, but also a conscious choice for consumers in the GCC seeking to contribute to the global goal of utilising clean energy and recyclable materials in their everyday usage of technology.
